Survey Context

Global environmental challenges are becoming increasingly acute on the world stage: progressive pollution of air, water, and soil, accelerating rates of global warming, large-scale deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Under martial law conditions and planning for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, the issues of environmental restoration and sustainable development are gaining special strategic importance for national security and European integration.

On December 11, 2019, the European Commission presented the “European Green Deal” – a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. This initiative envisions a fundamental transformation of the EU economy toward low-carbon and resource-efficient development while improving citizens’ quality of life.

As a candidate for European Union membership, Ukraine has committed to implementing Green Deal principles by integrating them into national policies and legislation. A significant component of this process is the formation of environmental consciousness among the population and ensuring broad public support for relevant reforms.

Research Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this sociological survey is to assess the level of awareness and attitudes of Ukrainian citizens regarding environmental challenges and the European Green Deal in the context of European integration processes and post-war reconstruction.

Key survey objectives:
  1. Determine the degree of awareness among different segments of the population regarding the European Green Deal and its components
  2. Identify priority environmental problems from the perspective of Ukrainian citizens
  3. Assess the level of understanding of the relationship between EU environmental standards and the European integration process
  4. Measure public support for specific implementation measures of EU climate policy in Ukraine
  5. Analyze the perception of potential economic and social consequences of the “green transition” for various sectors of the economy
  6. Explore citizens’ readiness for personal participation in environmental initiatives

Practical Significance of the Research

The survey results will contribute to the development of scientifically based recommendations regarding:

  • Optimization of state environmental policy and communication strategies
  • Integration of environmental aspects into post-war reconstruction programs
  • Ensuring an inclusive approach to the “green transition” of the Ukrainian economy
  • Increasing the effectiveness of environmental protection measures
  • Harmonization of national legislation with EU environmental standards
  • Formation of environmental culture and responsibility among the population

Thus, this survey is an important step toward understanding the public perception of Ukraine’s environmental modernization on the path to the European Union and implementing sustainable development principles.
