Representatives of the Center for Sustainable Development Law and Environmental Protection participated in the online course SYSTEM INNOVATION organized by the UniCities team, which took place on June 20-21
This training allowed participants to deepen their understanding and application of the concepts and principles of systemic innovation. Specific examples were considered that can be adapted to their own context, in particular in the work on the transition to sustainable development and the reconstruction of Ukrainian cities.

The first module covered the conceptual foundations of socio-technical systems and the need for a new vision when addressing climate change in cities. Specific learning outcomes:
– Describe the main processes and elements of socio-technical systems.
– Explain the basis of the multi-level perspective (MLP) of the transition to sustainable development.
– Reflect on the concept of systemic innovation.
– Collective discussion on the practical application of the presented concepts and examples.
After the participants learned the basics of socio-technical systems and the challenges and opportunities of the climate transition in the first module, the second module focused on practical approaches from both an organizational and individual perspective. The specific learning outcomes are as follows:
– Describe the theoretical framework for a better understanding of how to develop a collaborative environment in university centers from an organizational and individual perspective.
– Reflect on practical experiences in the Spanish context that can be inspirational for the Ukrainian context.
– Collective discussion on how to apply the concepts and experiences presented in practice.

The second day of the online course focused on strengthening collaboration in higher education institutions, with speakers sharing their experiences and ideas. The conversation focused on enhancing collaboration in higher education institutions, with speakers sharing their experiences and insights. Jaime Moreno emphasized the value of personal connections and emotions, while Anastasiia Pylypchenko highlighted the role of intermediaries. Speakers discussed strategies for effective collaboration in various contexts, including distributed teams, university settings, and transdisciplinary projects. The importance of shared vision, collective responsibility, and emergent planning was also emphasized, as well as the need for diverse profiles, effective communication, and capacity building. Challenges and opportunities in promoting sustainable development and environmental law and policy in Ukraine were also discussed, along with insights on building collaboration and overcoming challenges in Ukraine’s food sector.

The course was both informative and engaging, providing valuable insights into the critical role of structural systems innovation for sustainable urban development. The discussions on the first day were particularly thought-provoking. The emphasis on the crucial role of universities in rebuilding Ukrainian cities resonated deeply with us. The second day’s focus on strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions was equally valuable. Sharing experiences and ideas through the interactive sessions, especially the team brainstorming exercises, offered a fresh perspective on tackling complex challenges. Overall, the online course provided a rewarding learning experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to have participated and gained valuable knowledge that we can apply to our Center’s further development, as well as during practical work with students.
